WEBINAR 8: FIRE MANAGEMENT and carbon frameworks

Context

Strategic fire management techniques (such as prescribed burning and mechanical thinning) can reduce fuels loads and decrease fire risk. In some cases, this can lead to an overall decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from wildfire. This is an important element of fire management - if these emissions are measured and evaluated, they can be sold as carbon credits. A variety of public and private institutions purchase carbon credits from land use programs in order to meet emissions reductions requirements. This provides opportunities for fire management programs to generate income and employment opportunities for communities. In this webinar, Dr. Jeremy Russell-Smith discusses fire management and carbon credit frameworks, drawing from examples in Australia and around the world
